Workshop on Obstructive sleep apnoea and CPAP/ BIPAP therapy for OSA 

This workshop aims to provide an understanding of options for treating sleep disordered breathing and the most effective ways to use masks and identify ways of troubleshooting to achieve optimum patient compliance and effective therapy. The half-day programme provides a hands-on and practical approach to management of patients on CPAP, from mask fitting to initiation of CPAP, introduction to the various modes of CPAP, common problems encountered by patients on CPAP and troubleshooting.

Workshop

Station 1 - Introduction to CPAP machine (30 minutes) This station familiarizes the attendants with the components of CPAP/BiPAP machines along with teaching of different modes, settings and accessories and gives a hands on experience of different pressure settings. It also enables them to trouble shoot common problems while operating the machine and gives a practical approach to certain skill sets such as filling up humidifier, changing the controls and solving other common problems (high/low pressure, alarms, etc) related to the machine. It also educates them about the difference between the settings and mechanism of CPAP vs BiPAP machine. 

Station 2 - Mask Fitting and Desensitization (30 minutes) This station familiarizes the participants with different types of paediatric/infant masks, various strategies for appropriate mask fitting. The team members will be oriented about assessing for mask leaks or other issues related to improper mask size, desensitization strategies if the kid is not cooperative with the mask. educating the parents about the importance of compliance and various practical tips to ensure CPAP adherence.

Station 3 - Safe Discharge of Patient on CPAP (30 minutes) This station enables participants to assess the parents or caregivers understanding and competency of using the machine, handling of various accessories, troubleshooting common issues and recognizing the early signs of respiratory distress and seeking timely medical attention in such cases. Participants will be educated about a evidence based discharge checklist which will address all the aforementioned issues in details ensuring patient safety and it needs to signed by the discharging physician/nurse/RT and the parent/caregiver.
