About Al Jalila Children’s Hospital pediatric surgery fellowship program.

The Al Jalila children’s speciality hospital pediatric surgery fellowship program is a three-year training program accredited by the Saudi Commission for Health Speciality and run-in academic partnership with the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of medicine and health science. This program provides a unique opportunity for aspiring surgeons to be trained in an academic medical training program that is based on the CanMED competency framework and adopted the Saudi board pediatric Surgery curriculum.

The program is a three-year training program following completion of the full training In general surgery. During the first year of the pediatric surgery fellowship program, the fellow will spend six months in pediatric surgery, three months in pediatric urology, 3-month elective rotations (either radiology oncology or endoscopy) and one month of research. During the second and the final year the fellow will spend 11 months in pediatric surgery and one month in research.

The fellow will be exposed to a highly qualified pediatric surgery consultant and senior specialist with a broad range of pediatric general surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric gastroenterology, neonatal surgery, minimally invasive surgery and acute and long-term treatment of burn cases. We work in close collaboration with other relevant specialities in-house such as gastroenterology, endocrinology, oncology and radiology. We also run regular educational activities including daily morning reports, weekly journal clubs and evidence-based reviews in pediatric surgery, mortality morbidity meetings, radiology meetings and other multidisciplinary meetings to discuss complex cases. The fellow will also attend UAE Pediatric Surgery meetings every 3 to 4 months and international pediatric surgery meetings. The fellow is mandated to publish a paper/poster or to have at least two presentations at recognized international pediatric surgery conferences.

The acquisition of technical skills is one of the fundamental goals of the pediatric surgery fellowship program hence a logbook will be used to ensure that a good number of procedures are performed by the fellow during the rotation. Over the three years, the fellow should be able to demonstrate progressive operative independence, teach junior residents, council the sick children’s parents in a timely and professional way, gain parent trust by being honest, reliable and professional, and maintain an ethical practice.
